Local News: Slamfest to offer more courses

Mountain bikers will be relying less on peddling and more on gravity come next weekend’s Sima Slamfest.
On the opening day of the third annual event, participants will have the option of entering a chainless downhill race where the bike chains are removed, leaving gravity to do all the work.
“They’re pretty common, especially down in Whistler and places like that,” said race director Justin Mullan. “It’s honestly the best way to learn how to go fast, if you can’t peddle.”

Local News: Bike park gets name, Gonda defends his crown
Massey Baker performs a stunt at the Dirt n’ Soul Bike Park at Mt. McIntyre on Sunday
Whitehorse’s mountain bike community was in high gear this past weekend, with local cyclists having their pick of events to attend.
After six years in the planning, the new skills park at Mt. McIntyre officially opened Sunday with a celebration including music, prizes, a barbecue and demonstrations.
The Dirt n’ Soul Bike Park, as it was named, was completed in early June after about a year after construction first began. The park was designed by Jay Hoots, a professional rider, coach and owner of the BC-based company Hoots Inc., a mountain bike clothing and safety equipment manufacturer.

Local News: New ‘Dirt ‘n Soul Bike Park’ an immediate hit with young riders

... Alex Chisholme had only one wish regarding Whitehorse’s bike park – that it had gotten here sooner
The 19-year-old entered the pro category of the Goat Style Bike Jam held in Creston, BC, in July, and said that, while he failed to reach the final round, the experience of riding alongside the pros was worth the trip.
Growing up in Whitehorse, Chisholme was just one of the riders looking to reach that next level.
“For me, when I was in a prime age, trying to find jumps, there wasn’t that much at that time,” he said.
“I enjoyed the park last year, it was good, I rode these dirt jumps a lot, and it was nice to finally see a rhythm section in town, because most of the jumps that I’d ridden previously were just one-hits, and then you go back and hit one jump and come back again.”

Local News: Gonda retains his crown as King of the Canyon, Queen category returns

The King of the Canyon offered riders two choices: keep your head down and peddle or look up and enjoy the checkpoints.
The Yukon Mountain Bike championships, held on the Grey Mountain and Yukon River trails on Saturday, featured 50 kilometres of grind for those vying for king and queen honours and a 25-km haul for the prince and princess.
Dave Gonda, who has spent the summer training with the Calgary-based Cyclemeisters, reclaimed his crown as King of the Canyon with a time of 2:41.04.

Local News: Reams makes Team Canada’s selection pool for Worlds
Watson Lake’s Jesse Reams during a criterium race on Canada Day in Whitehorse. Reams was chosen for Team Canada’s selection pool at the World Road Race Championships next month.
Watson Lake cyclist Jesse Reams will be in race after race this month, but he’s not hoping for medal after medal – there’s a bigger prize at stake.
Reams is currently in Belgium as one of just eight Canadian cyclist vying for either four or five spots on the national team for the UCI Road World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, September 29 to October 3.
“I think I just need to focus on making sure I do my best to recover and rest and just get stronger as the month goes on and try not to worry if I have a bad race, just focus on the next one and ride smart and not be afraid to go for broke,” wrote Reams in an e-mail to the News. “(As for) my chances, well there are eight really strong guys in the pool, but I think Belgium racing really suits my style and strengths so hopeful I can get some good results and make the team.”

Local News: Mt. Sima mountain biking hits snag on opening day

Mt. Sima Ski Resort’s new downhill mountain biking initiative is already facing an uphill struggle.
Just two hours into offering downhill mountain biking to the public for the first time - on one of the hottest days this summer - the motor of the chairlift used to ferry cyclists and their bikes to the summit overheated.
“People have to realize it’s not a safety issue,” said Mt. Sima area manager Guillaume Rochet. “It’s just because it’s warm and the shack at the bottom is not insulated. We have to make sure it works when it’s too warm.
“We have to come up with a solution that provides a lower temperature in the engine room.”

Local News: Whitehorse cyclists capture four divisions in Kluane Chilkat

HAINES, ALASKA
There were few cyclists at the finish line of the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay who did not bemoan the strong headwinds during the race.
However, in four of the event’s 12 divisions, it was Whitehorse cyclists who were blowing away the competition during the 240-kilometre race from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska on Saturday.
Taking the overall top spot in the two-person women’s team was Whitehorse’s I Love Big Bottom Brackets beating out a second-place team from Douglas, Alaska. Whitehorse’s Salty Dames won third.

Local News: Newcomer lays down four-of-a-kind at Contagious opener
There would be a lot healthier poker players around card tables worldwide if every hand required a 12-kilometre bike ride.
That’s just what 46 poker-playing cyclists did in the Contagious Mountain Bike Club’s Poker Ride and Kick-Off BBQ on Saturday, starting and finishing at the Schwatka Lake boat launch.
Drawing five playing cards at stations throughout the 12-kilometre ride through Chadburn Lake trails and along Schwatka Lake, the winner was not the first over the finish line, but the one to return with the best hand.

Local News: Gonda crowned King of the Canyon
Apparently for some its not about the bike ...
<img border="0" align="right" src=http://www.yukon-news.com/news_images/2009/september/21/sportsfront1.jpg>David Gonda drops down a hill near Riverdale during the King of the Canyon mountain bike race on Saturday. Gonda finished first in the 47-kilometre race, in a time of 3:06:09.
According to mountain biker Ian Parker, training and working hard will get most riders a lot farther than leisure riding and pints of beer.
“(David Gonda) is just getting stronger and stronger this year, having benefited from his training for the Canada Summer Games,” said Parker.
“That’s the difference between training and just riding. My big event was back in June, nice and early, so I spent the rest of the summer just having fun riding, and Dave has been training and it shows.
“When the heat is on, the guy doing the training is going to beat the guy who’s been drinking beer and just having fun - unless it’s Jonah (Clarke). Jonah can drink beer and have fun, and still beat everyone.”

Here are the minuties of the 2007 VeloNorth AGM.Date: October 23, 2007
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Sport Yukon Board Room
Present: Bill Curtis, Grant Owen, Lara Melnik, Darren Holcombe, John Berryman, Scott Kerby, Bob Bowerman, Mike McCann
Review of Agenda
The Agenda for the evening was reviewed and accepted
Slide Presentation
There was a slide presentation of the 2007 season seen by those in attendance. Special thanks to Scott and Donna for pulling the slide show together and to all the folks that provided the pictures. Special thanks to Lara for all the pictures she provided through out the season.
We will look into how we can make the slide show available online.
Minutes of Last AGM
The minutes of the 2006 AGM were circulated for review and comment. No issues were raised.
Moved by Bill Curtis that the Minutes be accepted. Seconded by Bob Bowerman.
No discussion ensued
Motion to accept the Minutes as presented was carried
Budget
Bill presented the Club’s Financial Statement. The Club presently has a bank balance of $10,286.03. Bill pointed out that the Club actually lost $2,567.38 this season. This came about as a result of our $1,500 donation to the 24 Hr. of Light Race and equipment purchases for the Club’s trailer.
Bill noted that this coming year we will either have to reduce some of our Administrative costs e.g. Sport Yukon membership of $212.00 or consider increasing revenues either through donations or membership fee increase.
Moved by Lara Melnik that the Financial Statement be accepted. Seconded by Bob Bowerman.
A number of questions arose concerning the budget:
a. How did we accumulate the current surplus? It came about primarily as a result of our previous direct involvement with the 24 HR of Light event which generates a surplus of approx $4,000 each year.
b. What do we intend to do with the surplus? Previous Boards have polled the members to get direction on what to do with the surplus. Presently the direction has been to hold some funds in reserve as a contingency. Some money was identified as a “float” for race organizers and some identified as a potential donation to a community bike park.
Motion to accept the Budget as presented was carried.
President and Director’s Reports
Three verbal reports were presented.
President: Allan Frostad prepared some notes that were read at the meeting. Allan indicated that he would be unable to continue on as President due to other commitments. The time and effort that Allan put into forging positive working relationships with Contagious Mountain Bike Club and the Cycling Association was noted and appreciation for this work was noted.
Events – Mike McCann and Scott Kerby provided comments as to this past season. There were approximately 85 individuals who took part in the Clubs 25+ events held during the past season. Numbers stayed higher late in the season compared to other years and the quality of the riding seems to have improved.
The Club’s events need to continue to evolve and issues such as risk management and safety needs to be more formally addressed. The requirement of having trained flags persons for some our events has come to the fore as a result of Highways and Public Works enforcing sections of the Highway Motor Vehicle Act.
Of concern was potential volunteer burnout and it was agreed that we need to draw more into assisting/taking the lead with our extensive schedule.
Election of Officers
Bill Curtis chaired this part of the meeting and solicited nominees from the floor. A vote took place and the results of the elections are noted below.
Directors: John Berryman, Scott Kerby, Bob Bowerman
Treasurer: Bill Curtis
President: Mike McCann
