National News: Yukon’s Jackass

There are things that should never be done with Tabasco sauce and lime juice.
Snorting the peppery sauce up your nose and squeezing lime juice into your eyes is one example.
Unfortunately for Jason Lucas, he only found that out after the fact.
The whole thing was caught on camera on his newly released video, Idle Times.

National News: Flying cyclist issues cautionary warning
Last Sunday morning, as I cycled in the designated bike lane on Island Park Drive on my way to Pink Lake in Gatineau Park, I was hit by a car.
The car was waiting to make a left hand turn. A second car was waiting too -- it was right on the first car's rear bumper. I slowed down, but as I was passing the first car, the driver, feeling pressured by the car on his bumper, suddenly turned right into the designated cycling lane, to pull into a driveway. There was no time to avoid a collision and I hit the car, went over the hood and onto the pavement/grass.

National News: Cyclist killed in Laurentian Mountains
Another cyclist has died on Quebec roads — a 57-year-old man who was struck by a car in the town of Val Morin in the Laurentians on Saturday.
The man was riding alone on the shoulder of Highway 117, also known as Labelle Boulevard, when he was hit just after 8 p.m. ET, said Sgt. Richard Gagné of Quebec provincial police.
The cyclist died in hospital a few hours later. Other details were not immediately available.
Gagné said a 44-year-old woman will be charged with impaired driving causing death. The crash comes just two days after a 29-year-old driver of a pickup truck crashed into a group of cyclists on a highway in Rougemont, killing three and injuring three others.
Alcohol was not a factor in that incident, but the coroner investigating has said he will still be looking at whether the pickup was on cruise control. If that was the case, it's possible the driver was not fully concentrating on the road, André Dandavino said.

No Canadian has ever won an Olympic gold medal on home soil, not even at the Winter Games, where one would think Canadians might have a bit of an advantage. But all that may be about to change if the organizers of the Vancouver Games, which begin Friday, have their way.
They want to rewire the national mind-set and come away with not just a couple of golds but the most medals over all. They have dedicated roughly $118 million to enhancing the performance of Canadian athletes, and have financed something called the Top Secret project, in which teams of scientists have been studying the various winter sports in hope of gaining a technological edge.

National News: BC Bike Race 2010 Route Announced
BC Bike Race - The Ultimate Singletrack Experience is ready to unveil its new 2010 route that takes riders on a seven day mountain bike adventure from Vancouver to Whistler. Though year 4 will not see a big change to the overall incredibly successful 2009 course, organizers have made some final ‘tweaks’ to fine tune the route and to include as much singletrack as possible. The 2010 adventure promises to truly deliver more singletrack than any other event on the planet.
Taking all the feedback from participants over the last successful 3 years, BC Bike Race course designers have not only added more of the good stuff - loamy singletrack - but have also simplified the travel logistics. Day 3 will no longer involve a 5 a.m. wake up, but will be the usual relaxed affair that pervades this unusually fun adventure experience. By adding Powell River - a little known singletrack mecca with a beach front venue - as the Day 3 destination, BCBR has created a beautiful cruise concept, with 4 BC Ferries crossings... just enough travel time to socialize, relax, build excitement and see the amazing coast.
Last year's event started with a full stage on Vancouver's North Shore and the legendary locale delivered a fierce opening round. While many riders want to see, feel and taste the North Shore riding, a full stage may not be the best way for the uninitiated. 2010 will include a short 2-3 km North Shore prologue, with just enough up, down and twisty trail to give all participants a taste, while only whetting the appetite for the next 7 days.
“We were so excited about next year, we went out on course and shot video of each day’s singletrack, which we’ve edited and posted on our website” said BC Bike Race President, Dean Payne. “Just a few little teasers to keep you all pumped on what’s around the corner.”
Most other days will see only a few changes as, over the last few years, the course designers have spent countless hours sweeping and buffing trails to create the “Ultimate Singletrack Experience”. Finally, as if there won't be enough fun in all the singletrack, riders can also look forward to more onsite activities in 2010.

October 9, 2009 (Vancouver, BC) - We received word late last night from Larry Zimich that Barb, his better half, was involved in a serious accident last Saturday resulting in a broken femur and complicated leg surgery. We join the cycling community in wishing her a speedy recovery.
I wanted to pass on to you about Barb and a serious cycling accident she had last Saturday. While riding home on the Lions Gate bridge Barb was clipped by a pedestrian's jacket blowing in the wind which sent her to the ground. She was injured seriously with a broken femur which was complicated by spiral fractures to the calves.
After a very complicated surgery and four pints of blood lost, Barb had her leg reconstructed with plates and 10 screws. Unfortunately we found out today that Barb also now has a blood clot in the left lung, further complicating things.
Not a great time, wanted you to know.

Yukon cyclists finish road race unscathed
<img border="0" align="right" src=http://www.yukon-news.com/news_images/2009/august/21/cycling1.jpg>Team Yukon cyclist David Gonda (centre) heads into the final lap of Thursday’s road race at the Canada Summer Games in downtown Summerside. Gonda finished in 33rd place.
In mid-July, David Gonda was invited to join Team Yukon and compete at the Canada Summer Games even though he was just in his first year of competitive cycling.
The 21-year-old had to quickly become accustomed to many of the ins and outs of high-level competition, including some aspects you probably wouldn’t expect.
“That was probably one of the most tense races I’ve ever been in,” said the Whitehorse resident. “It’s hard to describe the sound of carbon and flesh skidding on the pavement when going right beside it. There were multiple crashes - probably five or six, I guess - with people going down hard.”

National News: Kabush, Pendrel take Canadian cross-country championship titles
Geoff Kabush and Catherine Pendrel will wear the red maple leaf jersey for the next 12 months after winning the Canadian national cross-country championships Saturday at St-Felicien, Quebec.
The winding course, which hosted a round of the UCI World Cup in 2007, was soaked by an afternoon of rain.
Kabush (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) took his sixth straight title in a close battle with Max Plaxton (Sho Air-Specialized) and Derek Zandstra (3 Rox Racing). Kabush trailed Plaxton for much of the final lap, but was able to come around the Sho Air rider on a paved climb close to the finish line. Kabush held on for a nine-second win.
Pendrel took her first national title in dominating fashion, dropping Quebec heroine Marie-Hèléne Prémont (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) early. The result marked a power shift in the Canadian women's ranks, as Prémont had owned the rainbow stripes for the previous four years. In 2008 Prémont squeaked by Pendrel by just six seconds.
Emily Batty (Trek Bicycle Store) took home the U23 women's crown, with Raphael Gagne (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) winning the men's U23 crown.

National News: Canadian cyclist missing near Vancouver
Canadian cyclist Daniel Hughes was last seen on June 5th going on a cycle run in Vancouver, British Columbia and he hasn't been seen since. His family has asked for help in finding the 29-year-old.
Hughes is cousin to BBC Scotland journalist Graham Mitchell. According to Hughes' family, it's not in his character to disappear, there's no history of depression or drug use, and they fear something bad has happened to him while out on his bike.
"Daniel is probably somewhere in the Vancouver area, and we feel it is in character that he may have gone to the North Shore or other forested or mountainous places," Mitchell said. "He was riding a distinctive bicycle (a yellow Marinoni road bike with red decals.
"He would have likely ridden on paved roads or easy trails, but he may have gotten off his bike and walked. If he had a bike accident and went off the road, he could be hidden in bushes," he added.
Mitchell is asking Vancouver readers of BikeRadar to help by putting up posters and keeping an eye out. Hughes was last seen 8:15 a.m., Friday, June 5.
Hughes is a Caucasian male, 6'2" tall, 180 pounds, with short brown hair, blue/green eyes and facial stubble.
"Specifically, ways to help find Daniel are: put up posters in southwestern BC, walk in Vancouver, walk trails and good cycling routes on the North Shore and other places in the Vancouver area.
"Please be extremely safe! If in doubt, don't go, and pass this information on to others," Mitchell added.
If you see or have seen Daniel, or a bicycle matching this description, please call Vancouver police at (604) 717-3321.
